How to Cancel Social Security After Death

Last updated: February 3, 2026

Social Security doesn't find out automatically when someone dies. You have to tell them — and it needs to happen quickly, because overpayments create real headaches later.

How to report the death

Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778). You can't report a death online. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 7 PM local time.

The funeral home may offer to report the death to Social Security as part of their services. If they do, confirm it was actually done — don't assume.

What happens to the final payment

Social Security benefits are paid one month behind. The payment received in the month of death is for the prior month and can be kept. Any payment received after the month of death must be returned.

Example: If someone dies in March, the March payment (which is for February) can be kept. The April payment (for March) must be returned.

Survivor benefits

A surviving spouse may be eligible for survivor benefits. The amount depends on:

  • The deceased's earnings record
  • The survivor's age when they apply
  • Whether the survivor is caring for the deceased's children under 16

You can apply for survivor benefits at the same time you report the death.

What documents you'll need

  • The deceased's Social Security number
  • A certified death certificate
  • Your Social Security number (the person reporting)
  • The deceased's date and place of birth
